Introduction to Git using R In-Person / Online

Overview: This workshop will give an introduction of how to work with Git in R. At the end of the workshop, you will:

> Become familiar with the main ideas of the version control system Git

> Be able to set up and configure Git

> Understand how to connect to Git, GitHub and GitHub repositories

> Push and pull files to/from Git in R

Prerequisites:

Software & Materials needed:

  • Install R and RStudio (or updated to the latest version) on your computer. You can find installation instructions here. Please contact us (cdsi.science@mcgill.ca) if you are having trouble with installation;
  • Have Git installed on your computer prior to the workshop. You can download Git free of charge at https://git-scm.com/downloads. There are versions for Mac, Windows and Linux.
  • Register an account on GitHub at https://github.com/signup prior to the workshop. GitHub is free of charge as long as you only create public repositories. If you want to use private repositories (only visible to you or persons you define) you can sign up to the GitHub Student Developer Pack at https://education.github.com/pack . This give you access to free private repos as long as you are a student at McGill.
  • You need to bring your own laptop for this workshop. Contact us if you would like to attend but it's impossible for you to bring a laptop.


Location: HYBRID. Online via Zoom, or in-person at Burnside Hall room 1104 (11th floor).
